Class Descriptions

Ballet

Ballet Technique classes are the foundation for training and focus on developing a solid ballet technique with emphasis on understanding correct body placement, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body (epaulement), and use of arms (port de bras). Class begins with work at the barre to build strength and coordination, followed by center exercises, culminating in a grand allegro combination or variation.

Acrobatics

Acro dance combines classical dance techniques with fluid and lyrical acrobatic movements. This class follows the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus and is taught by a certified Instructor. Dancers will work towards increasing flexibility, balance, strength, muscle control, discipline, body awareness, coordination and concentration while safely mastering various levels of Acro elements. The class will focus on fundamental acrobatic technique, teaching skills such as front and back walkovers, chin stands, hand balancing, and other contortion tricks. Dancers must attend a Pre-Acro class or an evaluation before being placed into their appropriate Acrobatics Arts level Acro Dance class. All students training in Acro level 2 or higher are also required to study dance technique (ballet, lyrical or jazz).

Tap

Tap will help dancers learn rhythm, musicality and a unique mind to foot connection. . As the dancer increases their vocabulary and mastery of the technique, dynamics such as accenting and shading are introduced. Faculty also make time to share the history of this American art form by sharing dances of legendary tap artists and teaching students the stories of the “old dances” that are part of the rich history of the art of tap dancing.

Expressive Dance

A 45 minute dance class (30 minutes for the Mini Expressive Classes) for toddlers containing ballet, tap & creative movement. Dancers will begin to learn proper dance technique and vocabulary while exploring their own creative movement styles using imaginative music and games in a safe and fun environment. Students also learn skills such as following directions, taking turns, and working with others.

Dance With Me

Dance With Me is a developmental class focusing on Parent/Guardian and child participation. The Parent/Guardian plays an integral part in class by providing comfort and modeling participation. Along with the instructor, adult and child will follow along with the instruction of the class. This class offers an introduction of valuable skills such as listening, taking turns, standing in line, following directions and sequential order. This class offers an environment for children to developmentally grow, both individually and socially in a dance class setting. Additionally, activities will explore gross motor skill development and rhythm activities. This class is a pre-introduction to dance and is a great class to help transition your children into a dance class on their own.

Fit & Flex

This class is designed to work on strength, flexibility, and the ‘tricks’ of dance. Improve your dance technique through this power packed class! The class will introduce you a new way to enhance your overall performance and provide a deeper understanding of your muscles and how they are involved in different key stretches. The benefits of stretching exercises are endless; they help in injury prevention, better muscle coordination, improved posture, enhance sports performance, increased range of motion, as well as, overall greater mental health.

Lyrical

These classes are for dancers who like precision and rhythm, physical challenges, and personal style and expression. Exercises focus on increasing flexibility and strength, rhythms and isolation of body parts, and expressing personal style. Lyrical is a slow, expressive type of dance that incorporates ballet technique. This dance style’s main goal is to interpret the lyrics of the song through movement focusing on the expression of inner feelings. This class emphasizes creativity in choreography and performance.

Jazz/Pom (Dance Squad)

In this class dancers will learn pom movements and terminology and begin exploring elevated levels of turns and jumps, as well as kick line technique.  Jazz exercises focus on increasing flexibility and strength, rhythms and isolation of body parts, and expressing personal style. Each class incorporates a formal warm-up, focusing on strength and stretching, training of proper Pom technique and combinations using Pom movements and jazz technique. This class is ideal for dancers wanting to pursue a dance team career in middle school, high school or college or even a professional sport sideline dancer.

Hip Hop

Hip-Hop class focuses on a combination of three main elements in hip hop dancing, popping, locking, and break dancing. Class begins with a warm-up in the center, progresses through isolations and end with a combination. Teachers focus on incorporating rhythmic qualities of music into the dancers’ body as well as learning to “follow the leader”; as there is no real defined technique for hip hop dancing. The emphasis is on finding a comfort zone for the dancer and teachers encourage individuality and confidence in movement. Dancers enrolled in hip-hop classes are encouraged to train in jazz dance to become a well-rounded jazz/hip-hop dancer.

Aerial Hoop

Aerial Hoop classes are taught by Acrobatic Arts/Aerial Arts Certified Instructors. The aerial hoop (also known as the lyra, aerial ring or cerceau/cerceaux) is a circular steel apparatus (resembling a hula hoop) suspended from the ceiling, on which circus artists may perform aerial acrobatics. Our Aerial Hoop classes are balanced training programs to cover technical skill, strength, flexibility, safety and spatial orientation. Training these elements together within a progressive syllabus will create a well rounded aerialist. As required by Aerial Arts, all students in an aerial hoop class should also be simultaneously training in acrobatics technique.
