DRESS CODE

Why do we have a dress code?

Dance class is about more than learning steps. Students learn posture, alignment and how to move gracefully before learning the dance steps and combos. The right dancewear allows the teacher a full view of the dancer’s posture and use of muscles. And, the right dancewear instills discipline, respect for class, and helps the student to feel like a dancer.

HAIR is part of dress code:

Having hair air up is important for balance and spotting during turns. The hair should be fixed flat against the head. Your teacher needs to see your ears and shoulders for corrections. For all classes, please remember that dancers may not wear large or distracting jewelry or accessories, small/minimal earrings are acceptable.

Shoes are a dancer’s instrument:

-They must fit snug. Do not expect them to last the season. You will probably need to replace them half way through the season. Ballet slippers should be pliable and show the outline of the toes. A teacher needs to see if a student is clenching their toes or properly spreading them. Young dancers need a full sole shoe so that they learn to work the muscles of the sole. Split sole shoes should be worn in a higher level when the dancer’s foot has developed. Young dancers also need a little wiggle room at the toes so that they can learn to spread their toes when rising up and pushing off the floor. When a dancers reaches their teens and the feet are done growing shoes need to be tighter so the dancer can feel the floor and move with ease. Dance shoes should never be worn outside while they are concurrently being used for dance class.  Not only does it bring outside germs to the studio floor, it tracks in small rocks/gravel/sand/salt which ruins our specialized vinyl flooring.

Dancers MUST wear tights for many reasons, including:

  • Professional appearance: Tights can complete a dance school dress code and help dancers look neat and professional.
  • Improved circulation: Tights provide light compression that improves circulation in the legs and feet, which can help dancers feel their legs and engage the correct muscles. This can also help relieve muscle fatigue after routines and avoid injuries like chafing and floor burns.
  • Moisture wicking: Modern tights can absorb perspiration from the legs and feet, which can be important in certain climates.
  • Hygiene: Tights can create a barrier between the dancer’s skin and other dancers, helping to prevent the spread of sweat, odors, and open scratches.
  • Modesty: Tights can provide good coverage and discretion.

** If a dancer shows up to class out of dress code they will get a warning wristband. If the dancer returns to class out of dress code they will not be allowed to participate in class for safety reasons. If a dancer shows up to class without tights on they will be asked to go to the office and purchase a pair of tights for $8 charged onto your parent portal account, please note tights are NON REFUNDABLE/EXCHANGEABLE.
